Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination consists in the introduction of a semen sample directly into the woman’s uterine cavity during an optimal time of ovulation.

Intrauterine insemination is a simple technique that is performed in The Fertile Group consultation rooms. It doesn’t require anesthesia or previous intake of antibiotics, in addition, it is not painful at all.

What is artificial insemination?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is an assisted reproduction procedure that consists of introducing inside the woman’s uterus of a sample of sperm prepared in advance.

It is a low complexity treatment in which, the fertilization process occurs naturally within the mother’s womb and the distance separating the spermatozoon and the ovum is shortened.

How do we perform intrauterine insemination?

Ovarian stimulation

To increase the chances of a successful insemination, a personalized ovarian stimulation is performed by administering hormones that activate the ovarian follicles growth.

Ultrasounds

The stimulation is monitored by a series of ultrasound scans for approximately 10-12 days and with blood estradiol tests until the follicles have reached an adequate size and number.

Ovulation

At this point ovulation is induced by a hCG hormone injection and the insemination is usually scheduled 36 hours after that administration.

The Insemination Day

Semen preparation

Two hours before the procedure, semen preparation is performed. This preparation consists in selecting and concentrating the spermatozoa with the best mobility to optimize the quality of the sample that will be used for the insemination.

The Insemination Day

Intrauterine insemination is very similar to a regular gynecological examination in which the cannula, loaded with semen, is passed through the cervix, enabling the sample to be introduced directly into patient’s uterus.

Types of Intrauterine Insemination

Intrauterine insemination can be done with either couple’s semen sample, or a semen donor sample. Donor semen is recommended when the quality of couple’s sample is not good enough or there is a risk of transmitting a genetic disorder to the child.

Women wishing to be mothers without a partner can also rely on intrauterine insemination with donor semen.

Results

A blood pregnancy test is usually done 2 weeks after insemination.
